Replacing the sub-base, the paving, and the drainage all in one go costs less than coming back twice, and it means your surface won’t sink or pool water after the first hard winter. A properly graded sub-base with good drainage underneath is what makes the difference between a patio that lasts and one that doesn’t.

Straight talking on materials

If you ask me what to go with, I’ll tell you what suits your garden and your budget. Porcelain holds its colour well and stays clean. Sandstone gives you something warmer underfoot. The sandstone flag riven surface finish is one I recommend often because it sits naturally in older gardens and gives a good grip in wet weather.
