Old flags versus modern porcelain

A lot of customers near us come in asking about ripping out tired York-stone-style flagstones. Fair enough. They crack, they stain, they lift. Vitrified porcelain is a different beast entirely. Frost-resistant, low maintenance, and it holds its colour properly. We still love a traditional sandstone look (and we’ll always talk you through both options honestly), but porcelain has genuinely changed what’s possible in a modest back garden.

Materials and finish

We work with what suits the job. On sloped or wet surfaces, we sometimes specify a flame-textured granite anti-slip finish. It performs well in the wet and it looks proper too. Not glamorous, but it does the work. I’ll be straight with you, I spent years underselling that finish before customers started asking for it by name.
